Broadcast Journalism

Introduction

As Ladue Publications operates separately from Ladue's broadcast journalism program, I wasn't introduced to this medium until I attended Elon University's Emerging Journalists Program. Immediately, I was thrust into lessons about b-roll, audio levels and framing. At the institute, I was privileged to produce three video packages, as well as direct and anchor a segment of our broadcast show. Despite not having previously been a broadcast journalist, the experience made me keenly aware of the impact an environment has on each interview — something that comes into play even in the print journalism world that I'm more familiar with.

Packages

Greensboro Civil Rights Museum’s Impact Hopes to Inspire Global Recognition

EJP.News • June 2024

In this package, I attempted a broadcast technique I had never tried before: a stand-up. Microphone in hand, I approached and interviewed two ladies visiting the Civil Rights Museum. Their answers spoke to the importance of civil rights education, a perspective that increased the story's relevance.

Dual Byline: I conducted the stand-up interview and shot all of the b-roll.

Interning Elon Senior Pushes for Community Engagement

Elon News Network • August 2024

With only the town hall to record in, this package proved difficult to report on through video. I had to get creative, using different angles and shots to tell the story in the most vivid way possible. The broadcast and accompanying story were picked up by Elon News Network, Elon University's news site, because of its relevance to the student body.

Conflict Spilling Over

EJP.News • June 2024

In this package, I interviewed an Elon student and his mentor about their study into the psychology of conflict. In the otherwise-deserted academic building, finding content for b-roll and ambient sounds wasn't so simple. So, I experimented with natural human conversation, emphasizing the interviewees' connection.

Dual Byline: I recorded the voiceover and b-roll.

Positions

Directing

EJP.News • June 2024

Directing my first-ever show was one of the most stressful things I've done as a journalist. It was my first time as a broadcast journalist — and the first time most of my staff — so I had to stay calm when weathering technical and managerial issues. Eventually, though, I figured it out — calling out "ready cam 4" and "take black" like a natural, guiding my staff in airing a show that celebrated the work we had put into creating each segment.

Anchoring

EJP.News • June 2024

As someone that was most used to being behind the screen — or pen — anchoring a broadcast segment was unnerving. I had to draw upon skills I'd learned from other aspects of my life, like speech & debate, to communicate with the camera in a way that exuded confidence. After all, anchoring isn't only about communicating the story — it's about using body language to inspire viewers to engage with and listen to your story.

From My Past

Interview with Dr. Kenneth Haller

iVoice • November 2021

In ninth grade, I created iVoice — a website that promoted accurate vaccine information across the community. This interview was my first attempt at journalism. Looking back on the segment, I definitely should've used a higher quality camera and included at least some b-roll. But I rewatch it to remind myself how much I've grown as a broadcaster — and journalist — creating pieces that primarily seek to inform and educate.
